'masterpiece'

sleeping in + sunshine + no plans + a little organising + creativity = a relaxing weekend

After almost a week of single parenting, it was great to have some time to reorganise our spaces and bring out some fresh materials.

Well, you know how one thing always leads to another.

While I was delving into the craft cupboard I decided to tackle the overflowing pile of Doots' preschool artwork from last year. Copious and prolific - and beautiful too - but this pile has been stuffed in there like too much of a good thing for too long.

Three piles emerged - one for keeping, treasured and safe in Doots' portfolio - one for the recycling bin (so hard to do, but so necessary) - and one for transforming into a 'masterpiece' (Doots' description, not mine).

I'd seen a post here. A big canvas. Many little squares. Snippets of a year's work of art. A year in the creative life of a child.

As we sorted, snipped, arranged and pasted, we talked about her experiences last year. A much loved teacher, the cozy environment, a special friend and lots of exploration through art - her sweet 3-4 year old memories came flooding back.

Truth be told, I did most of the sorting, snipping and pasting. But the finger painting, easel painting, chalk, dye wash and pastels are all hers.

We talked about making the art - the pieces she remembered doing, the ones she didn't. We talked about the different processes and materials.

It occurred to me that Doots was very lucky to have had the opportunity to attend this very special little place. One morning a week, one teacher, six children, masses of art work.

It is a masterpiece, it's on the wall, it makes me smile and I love it.

  4. Woowee! I think I just dribbled on my keyboard. Firstly, love the masterpiece. What a great way to preserve such a precious creative time in Doots' life in one carefully constructed piece.
Secondly, there are so many beautiful textures in your photos: the grain of the timber table top, the wax of the crayons. Lovely post. Makes me want to get out my own pencils and pastels.

  6. That's a wonderful idea! Artwork is so prolific when they're small, it's hard to keep it ALL. That's an awesome way to honor it without the PILES.

  22. Wow, that makes me wish I'd done something like that with my old school work I ruthlessly threw out after my Mum had so lovingly saved it all those years.
Oh well, now I have my own little art-creators so all is not lost :)

  34. Sarah! Hello there, how are you? Did you get a copy of the new Seeker Lover Keeper cd? If not I have a spare one my aunt sent me to give away on my blog, and I would love to send it to you :) Let me know :)

  35. Wow love this idea for the art collection preschoolers make. In reply to your question about the little red cape on my blog - I think I made a small for my petite 4 yr old ( she is about 105cm tall) and slim. I have lent my book and pattern I drafted to a friend so can't quite remember but will check when she returns it and let you know if it was the large.

  36. That's great. I hate to throw away any of Blake's pictures and have a huge pile in the utility. As he is so into "snipping out" and gluing at the moment, this is the perfect way to frame his mini-masterpieces. Thanks for the inspiration!

  38. Love it..what do i use for a background to paste the snippings to and how big is yours/should it be? I have a 3yr old who comes home every day with art work. and any ideas on what to do with all those macroni necklaces?!?!?

    1. Hi - I just used pva glue with a paint brush... but you could use mod podge or other specialty decoupage glues, but the pva worked fine. My canvas is about 60cm x 50cm, but you could use absolutely whatever size you like. The little squares are about 4cm x 4cm, but it was really a pretty freeform process of cutting, arranging and pasting down.

The hardest part was deciding to cut the artwork up, but once we started it was so much fun.

...and as for macaroni necklaces, how about adding them to your christmas tree decorations?!
